NYC Mayor seeks third term!

NEW YORK (Reuters) - New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg will seek a change in the law so he can run for a third term in 2009, arguing on Thursday that the financial crisis demands a leader of his business acumen.Voters imposed limits of two 4-year terms on elected city officials in 1993 and 1996, but Bloomberg, a former Wall Street trader and self-made billionaire, will ask the City Council to extend the limits to a third term. This would permit him to enter the mayoral race for the November 3, 2009, election.
And you thought that this only happens in banana republics? No! Its called politics!

Met Police Commissioner resigns
The Guardian:
Sir Ian Blair, the Metropolitan police commissioner, today announced that he is to step down after losing the support of the mayor of London, Boris Johnson.
Blair said he would have liked to continue as Britain's most senior policeman until his contract expired in 2010. But he said that at a meeting yesterday Johnson had told him in a "pleasant but determined" way that he wished to see a "change of leadership".
"Without the mayor's backing I do not think I can continue in the job," Blair told a news conference.
Johnson paid tribute to Blair's record in cutting crime in London but said it was time for "new leadership" in the force.
The mayor said there was "no particular story or allegation that was uppermost in our considerations.
"He and I agreed that this was an opportunity – with me taking over the Metropolitan Police Authority chairmanship – for a clean break and a new start for policing in London."
This should have happened months ago when the Met was blamed of H&S flaws.
My worry is about how partisan politics has 'interfered' with his decision.
Does this make London safer - I ask?

Exalting Obama!
When you think about it, it's astounding. A first term African-American Senator with an Arabic name who is descended from and still related to Muslims in the post-9/11 era is on the verge of being elected President of the United States. If you submitted this script to Hollywood, they'd laugh you off the lot.
You wonder why Americans are not warming up to this man! The whole world is fascinated and excited and had he been a candidate elsewhere, he would be leading with double digits in the polls, but bigotry still rules in the land that elected Bush in power TWICE!

I hope that this trend lasts!Barack Obama has opened up significant leads in virtually every key battleground state, according to multiple polls released Wednesday. The size of the shift towards the Democratic nominee may indeed be historic.
"It is difficult to find a modern competitive presidential race that has swung so dramatically, so quickly and so sharply this late in the campaign," says Peter Brown of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute. "In the last 20 days, Sen. Barack Obama has gone from seven points down to eight points up in Florida, while widening his leads to eight points in Ohio and 15 points in Pennsylvania."
The latest Quinnipiac polls show Obama crossing the 50 percent threshold in all three of those states:
Florida: 51 - 43
Ohio: 50 - 42
Pennsylvania: 54 - 39
